Earlier today I visited Trudy’s off of 183 at Burnet Road in Austin. Trudy’s has been around for a while as evidenced by the architecture and fixtures in the building. As I entered the restaurant I was greeted with a slightly pungent oder that I would never have associated with a Mexican restaurant. As I visited the mens room I encountered a very unpleasant odor. Chips were promptly served with a red and green salsa. The red was spicy and pretty tolerable but the green was approaching “4 alarms” and pretty far out of my comfort zone. As I browsed the menu it was apparent that the person who used it last was a messy eater. Several splotches of food covered important parts. I ordered “spiced beef suiza” (pronounced sweeza) which is beef enchiladas smothered in a spicy sour cream sauce. Served with rice which was tasteless except for the heat and re-fried beans that were average, the meal came with an unadvertised bonus of Mexican corn. The corn was laced with green peppers and was exceptionally tasty. The enchiladas were also top notch and pleasing to the pallet. My waitress was polite and attentive but confessed to being new and wasn’t completely familiar with the menu. Total price for meal with 2 beers and tip, $15.21.
